1. Dull / Uninteresting Email Subject Line
The subject line of your email is the very first thing your subscribers will come into contact with every time you send them an email. Whether or not your email gets opened (or sent to the thrash bin) will very much depend on how enticing the subject line is.
Therefore, it is extremely important that you take the effort to write an enticing email subject line – One that have the capability of standing out (from the rest of the emails that are in your subscribers inbox), have them notice and want to click on it to read it.
Having a dull, or uninteresting subject line will result in your email being sent to the thrash – And all your efforts to draft your email message comes to nothing.
2. Long Message Without Paragraphing
You have to understand and respect the fact that people are getting more and more busy with every single day. And they do not have the time to spend long periods of time reading a single email.
As such, you should keep your email messages short (preferably within 5 paragraphs, with each paragraph having 2 to 3 short sentences), where you mention only the most important points that you want your subscribers to know about.
By having long email messages with no paragraphing will only result in your readers thrashing it without reading.
3. Too Sales Hype-y
Think about it – If someone calls you on the phone one day and try to persistently sell you something, how will you feel? Will you feel irritated and frustrated?
This is exactly how your subscribers will feel if your email messages are too sales hype-y.
Not only that, they will not hesitate to scroll down to the bottom of the email and click on that “Unsubscribe” link and you have lost that subscriber for life. Or worst, they click on the “Report As Spam” button and report you as a spammer.
4. Full Of Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation Errors
It is a turn off reading an email message that is full of spelling, grammar and punctuation errors. People receiving email messages like these will likely not finish reading it before tossing it to the thrash bin.
Therefore, it is very important that, before you send out any email messages, make sure that you thoroughly check through the entire email message for such errors.
5. No Call To Action
People like to be told what to do. If you want them to click on the link in your email, make sure you tell them explicitly to click on the link. Otherwise, they will not do so.
I have seen many people making the mistake of not telling their subscribers what to do – By doing so you will leave your subscribers wondering what they should do next (after reading your email) and when that happens, what they will most likely do is to close the email message and move on to the next.
And as such, you will not be able to get the desired results you want for your email marketing efforts – Whether is it to get your subscribers to visit your website (where you can get repeated traffic) or get them to purchase a product/service you just recommended (where you get paid for every single sale you generate).
