Social bookmarking and social networking – Aren’t they the same?

This is what most people tell me – Especially people who are new to social media. Other than the fact that both of them start with the word “social”, they are two completely different things.

What do you know of this word called “Social Media”? Most of you, myself included, would relate it to social networking sites such as Twitter and FaceBook, am I right?

Actually, “social media” is more than just these 2 social networking sites. In fact, it has been around for a long time (it is just that we do not realize it). In the past, social media would consist of things such as the BBS (known as the “Bulletin Board Systems”) and chat rooms such as the IRC (known as the Internet Relay Chat), etc.
